Spurs shatter brave Shamrock,,,,

Tottenham recovered from a goal down to sink Shamrock Rovers 3-1 in the Europa League at White Hart Lane on Thursday.Tottenham looked in danger of succumbing to a European giant-killing act when Stephen Rice put the Irish champions ahead after 50 minutes of average work by the Premier League side.
Defoe and Dos Santos: Both on the scoresheet

But Roman Pavlyuchenko's towering header opened the way for goals from Jermain Defoe and Giovani dos Santos in five frantic minutes as Tottenham made their superior class pay to eventually run out comfortable winners. With the London derby against Arsenal on Sunday in mind Tottenham made 10 changes from the side which beat Wigan on Saturday. Yet while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp included youngsters such as Kyle Walker, Jake Livermore and Thomas Carroll in the starting line-up he still paid Rovers due respect with Defoe back from illness, Aaron Lennon returning from injury and experienced campaigners such as Sebastien Bassong, Vedran Corluka and Pavlyuchenko in the side. As for Rovers they had not met an English team in a competitive European game since they became the first Irish side to feature in the European Cup in 1957-58 when they lost 6-0 at home against Manchester United and 3-2 in the return leg at Old Trafford, just months before the Munich air crash. That was the history. The present Rovers side were determined to prove they could live with Premier League opposition and they made a pretty good fist of it in the first half with Rice and Stephen O'Donnell pressing and harrying in midfield and Gary Twigg working tirelessly up front. Even so Tottenham should have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Defoe was put clear by an astute pass from Dos Santos, only for Rovers goalkeeper Richard Brush to touch the England striker's right-foot shot on to the crossbar.
Brush was in action again three minutes later, this time producing a smart, instinctive save when he blocked a close-range effort from Pavlyuchenko. There was plenty of huff and puff from Tottenham, just a lack of accuracy with the final pass. And while the travelling Irish fans cheered their side's every pass it was Tottenham who rattled the woodwork again just after the half hour when the lively Dos Santos played in Danny Rose whose shot cannoned off the crossbar. Luck of the Irish, perhaps but there is more to Rovers' European journey than fortune. It had taken grit and resolve and no little skill to become the first Irish side to reach the group stages of either of the top two European competitions, including beating Partizan Belgrade in the play-off round last month. Even so it was still a shock when in the 50th minute Rovers took the lead. A brilliant free-kick from Gary McCabe was palmed away by Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini but Patrick Sullivan fired in the rebound and in the penalty melee which ensued Rice prodded the ball into the net. Rovers 1-0 up and one of the great European shocks was on the cards. Or at least it was until Tottenham woke up as the clock clicked on to the hour mark. The impressive Dos Santos supplied the delivery and Pavlyuchenko rose high above the Irish defenders to head home. It was the Russian's first goal of the season and the relief was palpable around White Hart lane. Cue a Tottenham surge with Defoe heading home a cross from substitute Andros Townsend two minutes later and Dos Santos making it five minutes of misery for Rovers when he smashed home his first goal for Tottenham since February 2009 with a powerful left-foot drive. The Irish dream was over although you would hardly have known it such was the enduring and raucous support from their fans. All that was left was for former Tottenham star Rohan Ricketts to come off the Rovers bench with 19 minutes remaining to savour a taste once more of life at the Lane and rue a night of what-might-have-beens.

New boys fire Gunners to win,,,,,,

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos scored as Arsenal claimed a 2-1 Champions League Group F victory over Olympiacos at Emirates Stadium.

With manager Arsene Wenger watching from the stands as he served the final game of his European touchline ban, the Gunners - who started with captain Robin van Persie on the bench - had raced into a 2-0 lead. However, in what has become a trademark of a disappointing start to the season, Arsenal looked anything but convincing at the back, with David Fuster powering in an unmarked header before the break. The Gunners, who head to arch-rivals Tottenham on Sunday, were happy to sit back on their lead - but were almost caught out when Olympiacos captain Vassilis Torosidis crashed a curling 25-yard effort against the crossbar. In the end, though, Arsenal did just enough to secure their second victory of the week and restored some much-needed confidence ahead of what is sure to be a testing trip to White Hart Lane. After a positive start by the Greeks, who had lost all of their nine previous European ties in England, with Fuster sidefooting wide, Arsenal went ahead in the eighth minute.
Alex Song, dropped back into central defence because of mounting injury problems, chipped the ball up to the edge of the Olympiacos area, where Oxlade-Chamberlain was onto it like a flash, before making the most of a ricochet off Ivan Marcano to cut inside and then drive a low shot into the bottom right corner.Arsenal, though, were fortunate not to concede a quick equaliser when Mikel Arteta had to clear Rafik Djebbour's close-range effort off the line. The Gunners looked to have given themselves some breathing space when Andre Santos doubled their lead on 20 minutes. The Brazil full-back, signed ahead of the deadline from Fenerbache, burst down the left before crossing to Marouane Chamakh. Jose Holebas made a saving tackle in the six-yard box, but the loose ball fell back to Santos, who turned Marcano before rolling his shot inside the near post. It should have been cruise control from then on in for Wenger's men, but this season, nothing is that simple.
Arsenal failed to defend a short corner, and Ariel Ibagaza pumped the ball back into the penalty area, where Fuster arrived unmarked to plant a header past the stranded Wojciech Szczesny. Olympiacos - who had only scored once on English soil before Wednesday night, conceding 29 - were soon pressing again as Djebbour found room down the right channel before driving in an angled shot which Szczesny tipped over. Tomas Rosicky, captain for the night with van Persie on the bench, then tripped Kevin Mirallas just a yard outside the penalty area, and received a yellow card for his thoughtless challenge. The visitors continued to be positive after the restart, with Mirallas drilling wide from 22 yards.Oxlade-Chamberlain, playing in England's third tier with Southampton last season, continued to look Arsenal's main threat, as he scampered away down the right and forced Olympiacos goalkeeper Franco Costanzo off his line to make a near-post block.
Arsenal were living dangerously, though, and the Greeks came within inches of drawing level on the hour when Torosidis cut inside to curl a brilliant 25-yard effort over Szczesny, which rattled the crossbar. Oxlade-Chamberlain was substituted by assistant manager Pat Rice, who was calling the shots in the dugout, and left to a standing ovation on 67 minutes, Wales captain Aaron Ramsey his replacement.Andrey Arshavin was released down the left and charged into the Olympiacos penalty area, before turning former Villa defender Olof Mellberg and bringing a save out of Costanzo. With 20 minutes left, van Persie replaced Chamakh as the home side looked for a third to kill off the tie. After being played at such a frantic pace, it was no surprise to see the tempo drop in the closing stages.Rice looked to protect Arsenal's lead when he sent on England full-back Kieran Gibbs to replace Arshavin for the final seven minutes.Despite defending deep, the Gunners were never really threatened and made it four points from their opening two Group F games.

Wenger calm over RVP contract,,,,,,,

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists there is no issue with star striker Robin van Persie's contract situation at The Emirates.
Van Persie: Under contract at Arsenal until 2013
Van Persie has hinted he is in no rush to commit his long-term future to the club with the Dutchman still having two years to run on his current deal. The news has fuelled rumours that Arsenal could lose van Persie in a similar way to how they sold Samir Nasri to Manchester City after the Frenchman refused to sign a new contract. Wenger insists they are determined to keep Van Persie, but he believes there is no rush to resolve the forward's future with the player under contract until 2013. "On our side we are quite clear. We are clear with our intention [to keep him] but after that you have to respect Van Persie," noted Wenger. "He has nearly two years to go so let's not make an immediate issue of something like that. "Two years in football is a very, very long time."

Barton hopes for England recall,,,,,,,,

Joey Barton would welcome an England call-up but while admitting a desire to play abroad, the QPR captain admits "life's good" for now.
         Barton: Fancies playing abroad
The 29-year-old moved to west London in the summer from Newcastle, where he had performed with aplomb over the past two seasons. Barton's form on Tyneside has been complemented by impressive performances in his short time with the R's, which has led to calls for the midfielder to add to the lone England cap he won in 2007. "It would be great to play for England again," Barton told the London Evening Standard. "I feel really sharp, as I should do having just turned 29 and I'm enjoying my football. "I think I'll play until I'm about 38 or 40 because my game is not based on pace or power, it's all about knowledge of football and manipulating the ball. "So I'm confident I can play for a long time. "If I decide to coach or manage in the future, it would be quite prudent to have experienced a different culture or philosophy of football. "Or even just experiencing how the approach changes when you manage players from different backgrounds or cultures.
"If the opportunity arose to play abroad in the future I'd definitely consider it." Barton joined QPR in late August and has since been appointed captain. The Liverpool-born midfielder admits he is loving life at the club and embracing everything that London has to offer. "I like to jump on the tube but I haven't got an Oyster card yet," he said. "I'm not a big fan of driving so once I get the internet set up at my new place I'll order my Oyster card and get going properly on the buses and the underground. "I'm not attracted by the bright lights of the city but there are things in this place I want to do to broaden my horizons. "I was in Soho the other day and there's loads of characters around there. "I like people-watching and was able to look at everyone and think 'maybe I'm not as peculiar as I once was'. "At the moment it feels great to be here. There's a lot more to see and do in London and that appeals to me. "But don't get me wrong, I also like to sit in on a Saturday night watching X-Factor and Match of the Day. "But I have an amazing opportunity at QPR to live in a great city and start a family here. Life's good."Meanwhile, the Football Association will not be taking any action against manager Neil Warnock for comments made against Michael Oliver on Sunday. The QPR boss questioned the performance of Oliver after his side rescued a point with a 1-1 home draw against Aston Villa at Loftus Road. Yesterday the FA wrote to QPR for their observations about a tweet from new owner Tony Fernandes yesterday in which he branded Oliver "blind".

Van Persie stalling on new deal,,,,,,,,,

Robin van Persie has revealed he is in no rush to sign a contract extension at Arsenal - but insisted he is happy with his current deal. The Gunners lost two of their most influential players over the summer as Cesc Fabregas returned to boyhood club Barcelona and Samir Nasri was lured to Manchester City.
Van Persie: Not the right time to discuss new deal
Boss Arsene Wenger announced last week that the process of signing up the likes of van Persie would begin immediately, after voicing concerns that Arsenal could not match the rewards on offer elsewhere. Van Persie, who was made captain at the Emirates following the departure of Fabregas and scored his 100th goal for the club against Bolton on Saturday, is coming towards the final 18 months of his contract. He maintains that he is satisfied with the situation as it stands and does not believe it is the right time to discuss an extension at such a busy stage of the season. "I still have almost two years left here, so for the moment that's fine. But I don't know, we will have to look," said the Dutch striker. "I'm happy with my contract, I'm good. That's how it is, I can't say much more. I can't look into the future." Asked if he might discuss a new deal soon, van Persie added: "Maybe I'll leave it because the main thing for me is the team and that we play well. "I do believe you have to look for a right moment to sit down and speak about your own stuff. "It's not only about me, it's about the team. We are not talking now because we are so busy - we have games every three or four days. I don't think it's clever to do that during the season."

Cech defends Euro obsession,,,,,,,

Petr Cech admits Chelsea are desperate to win the Champions League but insists they would not "shoot themselves" if they came up short again.
Cech: Says obsession is only natural for Chelsea
The Blues travel to Valencia this week for what is arguably their toughest Group E assignment as they continue their quest to lift Europe's biggest club prize for the first time. No-one has gone closer than Chelsea to winning the Champions League without managing to do so in the eight years since Roman Abramovich bought the club. Landing the European Cup has been described as an 'obsession' both for the Russian billionaire and his players, but Cech - who has played a part in all but one of the Blues' failures - has insisted that could be said about any big club. "Show me a team of the stature of Chelsea, Man United, Real Madrid or Barcelona who is not obsessed with winning the Champions League," the goalkeeper said. "If they are not, I'd be surprised why they play in it. "Even if you have won it before, you just want to keep winning the Champions League. "Every season, the ambition is to win the competition. People always use the word 'obsession' in a negative way, which I'm amazed by. "We are not obsessed in the way that, if we don't win it, we'll just go and shoot ourselves. That's not the case. "We are obsessed with the Champions League because this is a great competition to win. "In a positive way, we try to search for the victory. I think it's very good to have this 'obsession' because, if you're not hungry to win, you shouldn't play."
Chelsea have never failed to make the knockout stages of the Champions League during the Abramovich era and they can take a huge step towards an eighth straight last-16 tie with victory at the Mestalla on Wednesday. They currently top the group after beating Bayer Leverkusen - with Valencia only managing a draw in Genk - but Cech was under no illusions about the task at hand this week. "Everyone is counting Valencia as one of our main rivals and this will be a difficult one," he said. "When you are going for every trophy, it's always good to have as many points as possible as early as possible in the Champions League and then you can concentrate on the league and the Carling Cup. "Our aim is to get qualification as quickly as we can so we can concentrate on the Premier League until the New Year."

Arsenal wait on Walcott verdict,,,,,,,,

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott will need to undergo a scan to determine the full extent of a knee injury he suffered against Bolton on Saturday.
Walcott: Suffered knee injury against Bolton
The Gunners winger pulled up after attempting a sprint towards the end of the match and manager Arsene Wenger initially thought he had pulled a hamstring. However, it turned out to be a problem with his knee and Wenger does not yet know if Walcott will be facing a significant period on the sidelines.
The Gunners will certainly be hoping he makes a fast recovery, with a Champions League game at home to Olympiacos on Wednesday. Arsenal then face north London rivals Tottenham in the Premier League next Sunday before an international break, when Fabio Capello will want to have Walcott available for England's vital Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro. "We don't really know the extent of it," Wenger said of Walcott's injury after the match at Emirates Stadium. "It looked like a classic hamstring injury when Theo went down but he said he had a sharp pain in his knee. "He'll need a scan so we can assess what kind of damage it is."

AW: Pay may be a contract killer

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal could lose more key players, with the Gunners unable to match the rewards on offer at rival clubs.
Van Persie and Walcott: Wenger worried about contract talks
Wenger saw key midfield duo Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri leave Emirates Stadium in the summer as the lure of Barcelona and Manchester City proved too much to turn down. And with captain Robin van Persie, Andrey Arshavin, Thomas Vermaelen and Theo Walcott all coming towards the final 18 months of their current deals there are concerns that they could be the next to depart.
Wenger confirmed that discussions are due to get under way with the quartet immediately, but concedes that whatever the North London club can offer may not be enough. "The process on new contracts starts now. We will try to re-sign them all, but we tried before," the Frenchman said. "The gap on that front has become bigger for us, so I cannot today say that if we go to the maximum we are sure to sign a player. Even if we do that we are not sure. "We try to convince the players. Our desire is there to do it and we are ready to sit down with them, which is what we will do, but after we see where we go. "Cesc is a bargain for Barcelona. With Nasri, at least we got a reasonable price for a player with one year to go. "With Cesc, we were forced into a situation because he is one of the best midfielders in the world. We knew we would sell for less than he is worth."

Toffees sign up Hahnemann,,,,,,,

Everton have signed veteran American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann on a short-term contract until January.Hahnemann has signed a contract with the Toffees until January after being released by Wolves in the summer.
               Hahnemann: Signs short-term Toffees deal
The 39-year-old - holder of nine caps for the United States - will provide back-up at Goodison Park to compatriot Tim Howard and Jan Mucha. Everton boss David Moyes said: "It is difficult when you only have two senior goalkeepers - it only needs one of them to go down and then you are in trouble. "Marcus is friends with Tim. It is after the transfer window has closed and we had to look for someone who we knew. "I would have liked to have got somebody before the window closed if we could, but there were other priorities at the time. "It gives me someone who can help in the reserves and if we get an injury to a goalkeeper, he has got good experience of the Premier League and we can use him as back-up." Hahnemann arrives at Everton following a two-year spell at Molineux and he previously played in the Premier League with Reading.

Chicharito 'lucky', Vidic delay,,,,,,,,

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has made a quick recovery from injury but skipper Nemanja Vidic is no nearer a comeback.
Hernandez: Fergie considers him fortunate
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Hernandez has been lucky to emerge from a wild tackle by Ashley Cole unscathed. The Scot feared the worst when Hernandez was caught by Cole during the second half of Sunday's 3-1 Premier League win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Hernandez limped off and it appeared he was set for an extended period on the sidelines. However, the Mexican returned to training on Thursday and is in contention for Saturday's trip to Stoke. "Hernandez is very lucky," Ferguson said. "At the time he had no feeling in the leg. There was numbness and we thought there might have been some nerve damage. "But he trained very well yesterday and is available for tomorrow." Ferguson branded Cole's challenge reckless in the aftermath of the game, although referee Phil Dowd decided it was only worthy of a yellow card. The only conclusion the Scot could draw from that decision was the officials did not see it, and he is not entirely sure why his side did not get a penalty either. "I am confused," he said. "I don't think the referee could have seen it. "It was a spur-of-the-moment challenge by the player, reckless yes. "But I don't know how the referee could have possibly seen it and the linesman wasn't in any better position. "I don't know what the rules and regulations say about that when the ball is out of play - there seems to have been some discussion about it not being a penalty because the ball was out of play. "I wasn't aware of that - I don't think anyone was."
Ferguson is equally bemused by the state of Vidic's fitness. The Serbian limped out of the opening-day win at West Brom with a calf injury. At the time, it was estimated Vidic would be out for six weeks. However, that deadline is now approaching and the defender is no nearer a comeback. "It's slow progress with Nemanja," revealed Ferguson. "He's not done any training. He is still getting treatment on the calf. "Calves can be troublesome. I remember when Bryan Robson had calf trouble it kept him out for three months. "Hopefully it's not as long as that, but he's not making any great progress at the moment."

Fergie hopes for Rio boost,,,,,

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping central defender Rio Ferdinand will be fit for Manchester United's Premier League trip to Stoke on Saturday.
                      Ferdinand: Could face Stoke
Ferdinand injured a hamstring during the opening game at West Brom and although he returned for the win at Bolton earlier this month, he has then been sidelined for three games with a calf problem. United have not missed the 32-year-old too much, establishing a two-point lead at the top of the table whilst also marching into the Carling Cup fourth round with a victory over Ferdinand's former club Leeds on Tuesday. However, as well as the Red Devils have done in Ferdinand's absence, Ferguson believes a visit to the Britannia Stadium is one of those occasions when experience is vital.
The United boss has already pinpointed Stoke as being one of the top flight's emerging powers despite their four-goal hammering at Sunderland on Sunday. And, speaking to manutd.com, Ferguson would like to have Ferdinand back to offer some reassurance to his youthful squad. "I'm hoping Rio will be okay for Saturday," said Ferguson. "When you go to Stoke you need a bit of experience. "Rio came into the team when we played at Bolton and gave us that experience, so we hope he'll be fit for Saturday." As skipper Nemanja Vidic is also sidelined and Brazilian full-back Rafael is ruled out with a shoulder problem, United do not have a huge amount of options at the back. Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia were pressed into service in a strange-looking back four at Elland Road and they were joined by Dimitar Berbatov once 19-year-old debutant Eziekel Fryers had limped off with cramp. And if Ferdinand is available this weekend, in-form Phil Jones would probably switch to full-back as England's Chris Smalling is doubtful with a groin injury.

Hibs face Celtic cup challenge,,,,

Hibs face favourites Celtic in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals, while giantkillers Falkirk, East Fife and Ayr all travel to SPL sides.
Scottish League Cup: Quarter-final draw made
Most sides would have wanted to avoid Neil Lennon's Celtic in Thursday's draw and it was Colin Calderwood's Hibs who pulled the short straw, although at least they will have home advantage for next month's tie. Many eyes had been on the giantkilling trio, but all will be up against it in the last eight now. Falkirk, who stunned Rangers with a 3-2 win on Wednesday, must travel to Dundee United, while their Division One colleagues Ayr have been rewarded for their victory against Hearts with a trip to St Mirren. The other tie sees DivisIon Two East Fife, fresh from their penalty shoot-out victory over SPL side Aberdeen, head to Kilmarnock.

The ties will take place on October 25 and 26.

Full draw:

St Mirren v Ayr

Dundee United v Falkirk

Hibs v Celtic

Kilmarnock v East Fife

Cech injury fears allayed,,,,,,

Andre Villas-Boas says Petr Cech is "okay", despite the goalkeeper needing hospital treatment after the Carling Cup win over Fulham.
Cech: Suffered a knock against Fulham
Cech was forced off at half-time of the third-round tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday after suffering a head injury in a collision with Orlando Sa. Chelsea were already without understudy Hilario, meaning losing Cech left them with Ross Turnbull as their only recognised first-team goalkeeper. But after Turnbull helped his side to Wednesday night's controversial 4-3 penalty shootout win, Blues boss Villas-Boas revealed Cech had been given the all clear. "Petr went for a scan in the hospital and he's okay," he said. "He felt a little bit dizzy from the early concussion at half-time. "We decided, and he decided as well, it was better not to take risks." Cech could be forgiven for playing it safe.
The 29-year-old became the first high-profile goalkeeper to wear protective headgear in all matches after suffering a fractured skull in a sickening collision with Stephen Hunt at Reading five years ago. He also watched team-mate Didier Drogba knocked clean out by Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy almost four weeks ago, with the striker only fit enough on Wednesday night for a place on the bench. Villas-Boas had planned to bring Drogba on but was forced to think again, with Cech's injury part of a triple blow for Chelsea either side of half-time. The first befell Daniel Sturridge, who hurt himself netting a disallowed goal shortly before the break. Revealing the striker had a knee problem, Villas-Boas added: "The ligaments are okay. "If he misses one (game), it won't be more than that."

The final calamity occurred less than two minutes after the break, with Alex sent off for bringing down Kerim Frei. It meant Chelsea ended up playing more than 70 minutes with 10 men. Villas-Boas said: "We thought by that time that, as the game was going on, if we really had to go into extra-time, we could be struggling physically. "These players who played, a couple of them don't have enough minutes. "Straight away, you're going into a 120-minutes situation, which is a lot for the body. "That's why the win is special, because they were able to cope with it."
Chelsea's victory was all the more remarkable considering Fulham also missed a penalty in normal time and they arguably were denied another spot-kick before the most dramatic of shootouts. Frank Lampard and Mousa Dembele both had efforts saved before Bryan Ruiz stepped up for Fulham's fifth, which he crashed against the crossbar and possible down over the line. It was not given and replays were inconclusive as to whether or not the ball was in. Fulham boss Martin Jol said: "To be fair, I haven't seen it. "Somebody was standing in front of me." Villas-Boas, who began the week by complaining to referees' chief Mike Riley about the officials' performance in Chelsea's defeat at Manchester United on Sunday added: "Everybody was looking at each other wondering if it was celebration time. "The linesman was there so maybe, this time, the decision is good."

Owen only happy when playing,,,,,,

Michael Owen says he wants to "play all the time" after his double helped Manchester United beat Leeds 3-0 in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.

The striker scored twice as the Red Devils claimed victory in Yorkshire and he is hoping his record of 11 goals from his last 12 starts could lead to a more prominent first-team role. "I'm not content if I'm not playing," he told reporters after the third-round contest at Elland Road. "I get criticised a lot with things like 'you don't play, you pick your money up' and all the rest of it but I'm not proud of that fact. "I want to play all the time."
Owen hopes for a repeat of his first season at Old Trafford when he featured in 31 league and cup games but he is realistic about his chances due to the strength of United's squad. "If the season was going to be like the first season I was here, then I'd be delighted," he continued. "That was fantastic and I felt involved. I was always either on the bench or playing. "Obviously I want to be involved again but I appreciate that there's some top players in the team and in the squad and it's a challenge to get on the bench let alone into the first-team." The 31-year-old admits he felt pressure before the game against Leeds - his first appearance of the campaign for the Red Devils - and he was delighted to use his chance to once again prove the naysayers wrong. Owen added: "The best players in the world can have a bad game and if I have a bad game tonight, you can see the criticism before it even starts. "That negative thought is definitely in the back of your mind going into games because you can't put it right in three or four days' time like most other players that play all the time. "The pressure's on and thankfully every time I have started I've managed to quieten those people before they chirp up."
Owen is confident there is plenty of time left in his career and he would be delighted if he could build on the one-year contract extension he penned with the Premier League champions in the summer. "I believe I've got a few years left in me and I'd love it to be at Man United," he said. "For that to happen, I've got to be involved because the manager wouldn't want me sitting round and I wouldn't want to sit round if I wasn't part of the squad or part of things. "As we stand now, we've been playing four or five weeks of the season. We've only had one game a week so he hasn't rotated anyone really. "You could count all the players out there today and not many of them have had much action so hopefully now the season is underway and we're playing twice a week, the whole squad and not just me will get more of a chance." As for a possible return to the England fold, Owen is not letting himself worry about the subject. "I've got to play and score goals first so let's cross that bridge when it comes to it," he admitted.

Wenger defiant after cup win,,,,,

Arsene Wenger issued a defiant defence of his position after guiding Arsenal into the Carling Cup fourth round with a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury.

Wenger's squad have endured their worst start to a season under the Frenchman, who earlier in the day received the full backing of chief executive Ivan Gazidis in the wake of an appalling run of results and Saturday's 4-3 capitulation at struggling Blackburn. The misery around the Emirates Stadium, with an official attendance of just over 46,500 on Tuesday night, deepened when James Collins headed the League Two side ahead on 16 minutes. However, England defender Kieran Gibbs levelled before the break with his first senior goal before the lively Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired in a 25-yard effort on the hour and Yossi Benayoun wrapped things up late on. Despite the criticism, Wenger has no intentions of letting anything deflect him from his job. Asked if he should consider bringing in a defensive expert - such as former player Martin Keown - to help shore up the backline, the Arsenal manager responded: "I have just completed 30 years of coaching. I don't want to answer this kind of question."
On his 'vote of confidence' from the board, Wenger continued: "I am not bothered at all by this speculation. "I am completely focused on doing well. "I can understand that people are unhappy and criticise, but you know as well as I know people are very quick to go overboard. "I accept critics and I do not say it doesn't matter that people criticise us, and like anybody else, I prefer it when they say I am good. "When we do well we take all the plaudits, so we have to take as well all the blame when it doesn't go as well - but we have as well on both sides to take some distance. "When it goes well we must not completely believe what people say and when it does not go as well, we must not completely believe it." Wenger added: "I have just managed 14 years at this club and I have kept them 14 years in the Champions League and I hope it lasts another 14 years."

The Arsenal manager felt the "gamble" of a mixed squad selection had paid off, following what was a "nervy" opening spell. "Shrewsbury were direct, but not without technique and had some dangerous situations. One-all at half-time was not too bad for us," Wenger said. "In the second half, we took over and then it was all us." The Arsenal manager added: "We played a young team with a mixture of young players and experienced players. "We took a gamble and it worked because you could see some players that we haven't seen so much, like Oxlade-Chamberlain and [Francis] Coquelin, have done extremely well and that is positive for the future."Oxlade-Chamberlain certainly caught the eye following his all-action display, as the 18-year-old £10million signing from Southampton marked his first senior start with a fine strike. "He grew through the game and became stronger and stronger," Wenger said. "What came out was unbelievable - you didn't expect it after the first half. "You could see that he will be a first-team player here, that is for sure. He has still things to work on but, very quickly, he will be knocking on the door."
Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner had plenty of empathy for his opposite number. The veteran former Aston Villa and Wolves boss said: "The reaction of the Arsenal supporters was terrific - they were chanting his name. "The die-hards were here tonight and that shows you what they think of him and the respect they have for him." Turner felt his side - who are third in League Two - could have made more of the chances which came their way to add the Gunners to their Carling Cup scalps of Derby and Queen's Park Rangers. He said: "There is a feeling of disappointment. "We had a real go in the first half and once we started to pass the ball, using our pace and mobility, we caused Arsenal some problems - we could have gone 2-0 up, but it was not to be. "We should have done better for their equaliser, it was bread-and-butter defending, but in the second half, we never got going. "In the end, we fatigued, could not get near them and were beaten by superior players."

AVB complains to refs' chief.,,,,,,,,,,,,

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed he complained to refs' chief Mike Riley about the performance of the officials in Chelsea's Old Trafford defeat.
Villas-Boas: Unhappy with performance of officials
Villas-Boas was still smarting on Tuesday afternoon by the manner of what was his first loss in charge of the Blues and his first defeat in a league game for 17 months. Chelsea fell 2-0 behind at Old Trafford on Sunday to goals which replays showed should not have stood as both scorers had been offside, with Manchester United eventually running out 3-1 winners. Villas-Boas said: "Very, very unhappy with a poor performance from the referees, which in the end had a decisive role in the result, and I don't take it very, very lightly. "You expect the linesman to do his job. "I already went further ahead with the situation by speaking to the correct people. "We all feel very, very down when the referee had such an impact on the result."
Chelsea were also let down by their own wastefulness in front of goal, with Fernando Torres producing one of the worst misses in Premier League history. Villas-Boas refused to comment on his £50million striker's state of mind this afternoon, saying: "It's not a question about an individual player. "I'm very, very happy with how the team responded. "Everybody is strong and with the correct frame of mind." However, the Chelsea boss all but confirmed Torres would have to wait for the chance to redeem himself, revealing he planned to flood his team with youngsters for tomorrow night's Carling Cup third-round tie with Fulham. "It gives us a very good idea of where we stand regarding the young players that we are trying to bring through," said Villas-Boas, who announced Josh McEachran, Romelu Lukaku, Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand would all start tomorrow, with Didier Drogba leading the line after being sidelined for more than three weeks with a sickening head injury.

Gazidis: AW not a broken man,,,,

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis insists manager Arsene Wenger is not "a broken man" and "shouldn't be worried" about his job. Some reports have suggested that the French tactician finds himself under pressure after overseeing a disappointing opening to the 2011/12 campaign.
                 Wenger: Still hungry for success
Wenger has been considered to be virtually untouchable throughout his Arsenal tenure, but results and performances have taken an alarming dip of late. There is, however, full confidence within Emirates Stadium that fortunes will soon take a turn for the better and the season will be back on track. That is the view of Gazidis and he has assured Wenger that majority shareholder Stan Kroenke has no plans to wield the axe. He told Sky Sports News HD: "No, he shouldn't be worried. What I think Arsene is concerned about is what we have to do to set our course straight on the pitch. "Arsene and Stan and I have been working very closely together, there is no division between us, and there is a collective responsibility for what happens at the club.
"Arsene has been an incredible manager for this club, he is one of the most in-demand managers in the world, and we are very fortunate to have him tied down to a long-term contract. We are lucky to have someone who cares about the responsible development of the club. "Obviously in sport you always have ups and downs and the important thing is to keep focused on what we have to do and make sure we take the steps to turn around this season, but also that Arsenal can stay, as it has for the last 14 years, at the top of the game. We can then look ahead to next year and five to 10 years from now. I am convinced that we have a really solid platform to do that. "The financial position of the club is strong, that's the platform that has been created over the years by consistent success, and although we live in a short-term news cycle where every up and down will be reported on as if it is a catastrophe, the truth is that club has been incredibly consistent and will find its way back to consistency." Gazidis has also sought to play down reports suggesting Wenger has lost his appetite for the Gunners post. He claims the 61-year-old, who has spent 15 years in the Arsenal hot-seat, remains as determined as ever to lead the club into a bright and successful future. "He absolutely does," he added. "The portrayals of him as being a broken man could not be further from the truth. Arsene is incredibly focused on what he needs to do and addressing the issues that he has seen. "We have got a deep and strong squad, with a good mixture of youth and experience, and we know that we have the talent level to put things right."

Lampard still a key man for AVB,,,,,,

Andre Villas-Boas says Frank Lampard remains an important member of the Chelsea team despite substituting him at half-time at Old Trafford.
Lampard has been a virtual ever-present in the Blues side when fit over the past few years but Villas-Boas has made it clear he will drop any player that is underperforming. And the manager decided it was in Chelsea's best interests for Lampard to be replaced after the opening 45 minutes at Manchester United on Sunday, when United were leading 3-0.
Lampard: Substituted at Old Trafford on Sunday
Nicolas Anelka came on and his introduction paid immediate dividends as Fernando Torres was played in for a goal that reduced Chelsea's arrears, although they could not complete the comeback.
Villas-Boas maintains that not much should be read into Lampard's withdrawal, stressing that the England international will continue to play a vital part all season. "Those are the decisions that we had to make, bearing in mind the result at half-time," Villas-Boas explained on Sky Sports News. "It was an attacking substitution that we thought would be right, not because Lamps was playing bad because he wasn't. He was having quite an impact in the game. "It was just something we had to do to adapt the team to a more attacking style, not that he doesn't give attacking style because he does and he has proven it throughout his career. "Nothing dramatic. Frank is a fantastic player and will be one of our key players for the rest of the season." Villas-Boas refused to get drawn into a debate on Fernando Torres' state of mind following his horror miss against United.
The Spaniard squandered a glorious opportunity in the closing stages with the goal gaping after going round David de Gea. Prior to that embarrassing moment he had performed better but, having been in poor form for such a long time, there has been plenty of discussion about how the miss will affect Torres' confidence. "It is not a question about an individual player. We are very happy with how the team has responded and we have managed two days' training," Villas-Boas said ahead of Wednesday's Carling Cup tie at home to Fulham. "Everybody has come back strong and with the correct frame of mind to change from one competition to another." Villas-Boas plans to make changes for the midweek clash with the Cottagers but is still determined to go as far as he can in the Carling Cup. "Opportunities will be given to our youngest players," he said. "We have to put ourselves of course in a situation where we can try to win the game and try to continue in the competition."

Hernandez set for return,,,,

Javier Hernandez will be back in training on Wednesday, according to the Manchester United striker's agent. The Mexican was injured following a late challenge by Ashley Cole in Sunday's 3-1 defeat of Chelsea.
Hernandez: Caught by Cole tackle on Sunday
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's immediate reaction was to rule Hernandez out for two weeks but there were fears the striker could be sidelined for much longer.
However, after sending the £7million buy for scans on Monday, his agent said Hernandez has suffered nothing worse than a "bump" and the player will be back in training after Tuesday night's Carling Cup trip to Leeds. "Nothing, it's just a bump, nothing more," said Eduardo Hernandez. "It looked like (his absence) was longer, they were looking for a fracture, that's why they ran those tests on him. "I expect him to be training without incident on Wednesday." With fears of a long absence allayed, record signing Dimitar Berbatov is now expected to make his first start of the season at Elland Road. The Bulgarian secured a share of the Premier League's Golden Boot with Carlos Tevez last term but, thus far, has been restricted to just two substitute appearances, the latest as Hernandez's replacement at the weekend.

Redknapp wants Modric ,,,,,,,,,,

Harry Redknapp believes it is only right that Luka Modric should be given a pay rise to merit his standing as a £40million-valued player.
                   Modric: Scored against Liverpool
Chelsea lodged at least three bids for the player in the close season - the last one a £40million offer - but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy stood firm and refused to sell the midfielder. Since the transfer window closed, Modric has thrived, playing well at Wolves before scoring a blistering strike in Sunday's 4-0 win over Liverpool.
Despite his actions, Redknapp thinks Modric's worth to the team warrants a rise on his current pay packet - which is reported to be between £40,000 and £50,000 a week. Redknapp said: "If he is worth £40million then life tells you that you have to be paid accordingly doesn't it? "You can't say he is worth £40million and want to pay him the wages of someone who is worth £5million. "That doesn't ring true does it? You have to look after the boy and I'm sure we will do that and his future is hopefully here. "We have to convince him that his future is here and make it right for the boy, that's only fair as well, and I'm sure the chairman will be fair and make sure he does that." Modric's 20-yard strike set Spurs on their way to victory on Sunday before Jermain Defoe scored his third of the season and Emmanuel Adebayor marked his home debut by bagging a brace. Adebayor, signed on a season-long loan earlier this month, now has three goals in two games for Spurs after developing a strong partnership with Defoe, and Redknapp thinks the former Arsenal man can score 20 goals this year. "I thought Adebayor was fantastic," Redknapp said. "He has got a great football brain, great awareness, a great touch. He has three goals in two games. There is no reason why he shouldn't be up there with 20 goals at least this year."

Redknapp thinks Defoe, who scored just four league goals last term, can also hit the 20-goal mark. "The pair of them have linked up well together," Redknapp added. "Jermain has been in great form. "Last year was probably his first bad year. Every year he is a 16 or 18 goals a year man. He should be hitting 20 a year with his finishing ability and this could be the year where he is back up to 20 goals a year." Redknapp takes his side to Stoke on Tuesday night for the club's Carling Cup third round clash at the Britannia Stadium. He will make wholesale changes to his team, with the likes of Jake Livermore, Giovani dos Santos and Jake Livermore expected to start. The Spurs boss may also use the match to test the fitness of William Gallas and Sandro, who are fit again after missing the start of the season with calf and knee injuries. Heurelho Gomes, who has fallen behind Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini in the pecking order, will return in goal, but is still likely to leave in January. Redknapp said: "I don't think he is happy here, we don't want to kid ourselves. He wants to play in the World Cup in Brazil. Obviously to do that he needs to be playing so it's going to be a problem. "We will wait and see where that takes us at the next window but while he is here you couldn't get a better pro. He has done nothing wrong at all."

Cole to face no action ,,,,,,

The Football Association has confirmed Chelsea defender Ashley Cole will not face further action for his shin-high tackle on Javier Hernandez.
Cole: Booked for challenge on Hernandez
Cole was booked for clattering into Hernandez as the striker shot wide in Manchester United's 3-1 Premier League win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Cole should have been sent off but, under FIFA rules, Cole cannot be punished retrospectively because the officials took action to deal with the incident at the time. Referee Phil Dowd elected to consult with his assistant before deeming a yellow card to be a sufficient sanction.
Andre Villas-Boas defended Cole over the tackle after the game. "Maybe he wouldn't get sent off if the linesman does his work," said the Chelsea boss. "He would have been less emotionally drained. "I work the other way round. You are trying to say the referee did something wrong. I cannot forget the previous two. "If it was 0-0 maybe Ashley is a little bit more mentally in control of the situation and doesn't do the red card foul that you mention." Villas-Boas is not reading too much in the Old Trafford defeat, stating the league is wide open having seen the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City also fail to win over the weekend. "As I said before, nothing that happened here would mean anything in the Premier League table," he continued. "It is an unexpected league. "Manchester City have the most amazing squad as well, but they didn't win. Arsenal and Liverpool lost."All of the five contenders are there. Anything can happen. "The most regular is United at the moment but we showed we are up to the level of the champions."

Alex slams De Gea 'agenda',,,,,,

Sir Alex Ferguson insists David de Gea will start against Chelsea and has blasted a perceived media agenda against the young goalkeeper. The 20-year-old Spanish shot-stopper joined Manchester United in a £18.3m move from Atletico Madrid in the summer to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.

Since then, he has been under intense media scrutiny, especially after making several early season blunders, while fellow keeper Anders Lindegaard - who joined the Red Devils last November from Aalesund - put in a commanding display in the midweek UEFA Champions League draw with Benfica. Asked if Lindegaard's good performance had presented him with a selection dilemma to face Chelsea, Ferguson told the Sunday Mirror: "Not a bit."There is an agenda from the media on de Gea. "We experienced that again on Wednesday night. For some reason they seem to be desperate for the boy to fail. That's the impression I get and I don't understand it. "And they'll all want interviews from him when he's doing well. "He'll be back in the team. That was always the arrangement. "Same at Bolton last week. "He didn't have to deal with stories about being left out because he knew he was playing. "He knew on Thursday. So waking up to that wouldn't have been a problem. "He doesn't speak English, he's looking for a house, he's learning to drive here, he's come into another country, he doesn't know the culture and he's 20 years of age. There's a lot he's had to deal with. "But he's shown great composure about the whole thing. "He's not got himself flapping about in the goalmouth. "He's absolutely outstanding, the boy. Tremendous."
The United boss insists Lindegaard understands the club were going to bring another keeper in and he is happy to fight for the number one jersey. "We've got two terrific goalkeepers," he said. "Anders has done well, he's bided his time, he's been patient. "He understood the situation when we signed him. He knew we were going to sign another goalkeeper."It was put to him that this season he would be in a position where he could challenge for the place and he was happy with that. "He was delighted to join United and he showed on Wednesday he's a good goalkeeper. "The great thing about the two of them is their distribution of the ball to the back four and midfield players. That's a fantastic asset in the modern game. "David started seven moves that ended in Bolton's penalty box."Meanwhile, Ferguson is looking forward to pitting his wits against new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas. "I'm interested in what their team is going to be because they've got a lot of options," he added. "This is an important match, as is City in October. "But I'd rather lose to them and win every other game. "All you want is to win the league and I still think that 83 points will win it."

Anelka departure,,,

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas believes veteran striker Nicolas Anelka will be heading out of Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

The French ace is in the final year of his contract and, while Chelsea would like him to renew, Villas-Boas has revealed the striker has indicated he is prepared to run down his current deal. Anelka turns 33 in March and his future at Chelsea looked under threat when Carlo Ancelotti was sacked as manager during the summer. But he has since impressed under new boss Villas-Boas, being selected ahead of Fernando Torres for last weekend's Premier League win at Sunderland and shining as a substitute in Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
It would be no surprise to see him recalled for Sunday's crunch Premier League clash at Manchester United, but when asked if Anelka's performances might see him offered a new contract, Villas-Boas said: "It might not be the player's expectancy to renew. "Nico as a person is very, very happy, he belongs to Chelsea in the last year of his contract, performing."We will make our efforts for him to renew but Nico has his own decision to make and I am not sure he will be willing." Pressed on whether the player had indicated he wanted to leave, Villas-Boas replied: "Yes." Uncertainty also remains about the future of Didier Drogba, who has been offered a deal to replace the one that expires next summer. Chelsea have yet to reach an agreement with the Ivory Coast striker and must hope to do so before the end of the year to prevent him having the option of signing a pre-contract with another club in January.Villas-Boas refused to discuss details of the impasse, saying: "I would not like to share it with you as you would speculate with it for the rest of the season."

chuffed with Reds form,,,,

Charlie Adam is satisfied with the start to his Liverpool career - but knows he has to keep on improving to maintain his place in the side.

The Scotland international has started every match this season - including the Carling Cup victory at Exeter - but last weekend's defeat at Stoke was probably his poorest performance of the five.Competition for midfield places is strong and about to get stronger with the impending return of captain Steven Gerrard, who has been sidelined for six months after a groin operation in March. And Adam, a £6.75million signing from relegated Blackpool in the summer, hopes he can go on impressing manager Kenny Dalglish to keep his place. "We had a disappointing result at Stoke but overall I think we have done okay and can get better." The 1-0 reverse at the Britannia Stadium was the Reds' first of the season and they face another tough away game at Tottenham on Sunday. Spurs tried to snatch Adam from under Liverpool's noses last January with a late bid. Neither club was able to succeed but, with the 25-year-old having his heart set on Anfield, he completed his move six months later.

Harry Redknapp saw the situation reversed in the summer with Chelsea relentlessly pursuing Luka Modric but failing to tempt Spurs to part with their prized asset. It is going to be difficult but we've got good players who are ready for it. "We were disappointed last weekend at Stoke because we created a lot of chances and probably could have come away with something. "Maybe a point would have been nice. We thought we should have had three but that's the way football goes and we'll get on with it and get ready for Tottenham." Dalglish believes Redknapp's decision to rest so many players in midweek means no-one will have the advantage come Sunday. "They only took one player who played last Saturday so they are going to be at their strongest on Sunday," said the 60-year-old. "No-one is going to get any benefit from being in or out of Europe. "Harry has done a fantastic job there - they are a very exciting and attacking team. "Maybe getting into the Champions League acted against them when they finished fifth last season."There is a lot of good in their side but I don't think we are too bad either."

City not only threat,,,,

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has dismissed the notion that the Premier League is already a two-horse race. With the two Manchester clubs both recording 100 per cent starts from their opening four games, scoring 33 goals between them in the process, some pundits have already written off the chasing pack. Ahead of Sunday's Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea, Carrick does not believe that is the smartest move. Under new coach Andre Villas-Boas, the Blues are only two points behind, recording three straight wins since drawing their opening match at Stoke. Obviously that didn't happen. "We are playing well and we are top of the league. But we still respect the other teams for the threat they pose to us."

Chelsea are not lacking in motivation. They had tended to have the better of their meetings with United, including scoring a controversial victory over their old rivals at Stamford Bridge in March after which Sir Alex Ferguson ended up with a five-match touchline ban for criticising the performance of referee Martin Atkinson. With Chris Smalling seemingly certain to start at right-back, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones are scrapping it out for the right to partner Ferdinand. Anderson will return in central midfield, where he will be paired with either Carrick, Darren Fletcher or this week's goalscoring hero Ryan Giggs, who tends not to play two games in a row but was instrumental in those previous Chelsea triumphs. Park Ji-sung is another big-game player, although it is hard to see how Nani or Ashley Young could be excluded and Ferguson revealed yesterday that Javier Hernandez will be named in attack alongside Wayne Rooney. Having played down United's present position, Carrick is aware that victory would put them at least five points clear of all their major rivals, with the exception of City. It is a situation they would have been more than happy with when the campaign began five weeks ago and, having dropped just two points in their last 23 home games, one they are confident of securing.
"When we looked at the fixture list at the start of the season, it looked like a really tough start," Carrick said. "We have to be really happy to reach this stage in this position. "Chelsea is the next game and you want to be taking points off your rivals, especially at home. "We have been good at that over the last couple of years - last season especially. Hopefully we can carry that on."

pondered Spurs exit,,,,

Gareth Bale has insisted he remains happy at Tottenham and did not think about leaving the club during the transfer window.

The Welshman's dazzling performances last season, especially in the UEFA Champions League, saw him linked with a move elsewhere as a host of Europe's top teams sat up to take notice. However, the speculation was put to an end before it could really intensify as Spurs announced in March that Bale had put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year contract. While the future of team-mate Luka Modric stayed shrouded in uncertainty until the end of August, Harry Redknapp at least had no such concerns about losing Bale. And the 22-year-old winger insists that Tottenham are the perfect club for him as he strives to fulfil his potential. "I never really thought about leaving Tottenham in the summer. I just signed a new deal and I'm enjoying my football," Bale told Sky Sports News. "I'm playing well and I'm playing regularly. The main thing for me, I'm still young, is that I want to be playing week in, week out and getting better, and I'm still at an age where I can keep improving." Bale admits the presence of Redknapp in the White Hart Lane dugout is one of the reasons for his contentment at the club. "He lets all the players express themselves, and for a manager to give you that kind of licence there is nothing better," he explained.
The next challenge for Bale is to try and help Tottenham beat Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, although he is expecting a tough game against a side that has strengthened since being pipped to fifth place by Spurs last season. "We know what they are capable of. They have beaten Arsenal already and are going to be contenders for the top four, so we're going to have to be right at the peak of our game"I think you see it with the rugby. The British Lions manage to do it and still manage to keep their own identities, so I don't see any reason why it can't be sorted."

blasts 'pampered' stars,,,,

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes feels the country's "pampered" players have no chance of winning a major trophy in the near future. And the ex-Manchester United player also hit out at managers who he believes go for the national team job for the money.

Scholes made his comments in an unusually outspoken interview with United fanzine Red News."The England team these days are treated like world superstars from what they do at club level," he said."I don't think that helps when they go to England (duty) because they're all mollycoddled and pampered."They're treated like they're world champions before actually being a successful team to do that."The England manager changes that often there can never be that stability and I think managers just go out for the England job for the money these days."England's only major trophy came on home soil in the 1966 World Cup and, asked if he could see any prospect of an end to the drought, Scholes continued: "You would always like to say 'yes' but at the minute, no I can't."You can go over the last four or five tournaments - England may have got to a couple of quarter-finals, but there's nothing else to show for it and South Africa was a complete disaster."

City must be ruthless,,,,,,,

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini believes his free-scoring side need to be even more ruthless in front of goal - like Manchester United.City have struck 15 times in winning their opening four Premier League games but neighbours and arch-rivals United, who also have a 100% record and top the table, have still scored three more. When City underlined their title credentials with a 5-1 win at Tottenham last month, United bettered them by thrashing Arsenal 8-2.

Mancini's men impressed again by beating Wigan 3-0 last week, only for United to hammer Bolton 5-0. Mancini said: "Man United are a top team, they have been used to winning for a long time. They have strong players. "When they played against Arsenal, when they scored two or three goals, they continued trying to score. "We need to have this mentality. If we have a game like Tottenham where we can score, we need to continue to try to play." Mancini, however, does accept that his attack, even with expensive talents such as Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli to call upon, will not fire every time. One such occasion was Wednesday, when City were held to a 1-1 draw by Napoli on their Champions League debut at the Etihad Stadium.

Mancini, however, was pleased with his side's debut outing in the competition even though they needed to come from behind to claim a point in the Group A clash. He said: "This can happen in the Champions League, it is a top competition. "We have players who have played this competition in the past but were playing for the first time with Manchester City. "We wanted to win but sometimes you lose some balance. We lost this for 10 minutes in the second half. "I think we made some mistakes but this was normal. "We had 70 per cent of the possession and I think we missed only a goal in the first half. I am happy after the first game."

The game was a new experience and a learning curve for City but Mancini expects improvement in the next game at German giants Bayern Munich. He said: "Every game will be hard. Bayern Munich are a top club, they have won everything, but I think it will be good for us." Mancini is likely to make changes for the weekend trip to Craven Cottage. Last season's top scorer and talisman Carlos Tevez, who was back on the bench in midweek after starting his first game of the season at Wigan, will hope for a recall. Tevez, who failed to secure the summer move he craved, now seems to have fallen down the pecking order and Mancini says he must accept that situation. He said: "I think he is okay. "In this moment there are players that are better than him but Carlos is here training. "Carlos will have a chance to play. I don't know if he is happy but every player that can't play is not happy, this is normal. "In this moment it is like this but he will have his moment."
