Why Call it Soccer when it sounds good as football.

I really get annoyed when football; the game i endear so much and grew up learning in its name is lambasted as soccer. And the irony is, football is soccer due to American Football being the well known football(only to the Yanks off course). I do not seriously understand why on earth would a man in the right sense of his mind call American football football when most of the time the players actually handle the ball. They might as well call it slughorns or sth. But most of all this disrespect to greatest game in this planet must be stopped and once and for all football should be football not the soccer liked by the Yanks.
